Certificate Of Higher Education In Social Sciences (CHESS)
The ‘Certificate of Higher Education in Social Sciences’ (CHESS) is a qualification in its own right. It provides an entry route to the Economics, Management, Finance and Social Sciences degrees offered through the International Programmes with academic direction from LSE.

Entrance Requirements
Age Requirements:
Students must normally be aged 18 or above before 31 December in the year they first register.
Entrance Qualifications:
One GCE/A level (or equivalent) and 4 GCSE/O levels (or equivalent as set out in the Qualifications for Entrance PDF on the International Programmes website) including Mathematics
OR
Six GCSE/O levels (or equivalent) including Mathematics.
Maths Requirements:
GCSE / O level Maths with a grade C or above or equivalent.
English Language Proficiency:
- IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each sub-test) or equivalent, as set out on the International Programmes website.
- University of London International Foundation Certificate.
Process Of Admission – Admission Criteria
In addition to meeting the general entrance requirements set out in the regulations for the Diploma in Economics/Diploma in Social Sciences, two criteria that are especially important for institutions when selecting students are:
- That the students have the necessary academic skills and ability after one academic year of full time or two years of part-time study, of achieving a standard qualifying them to proceed to the second year of a degree course in the social sciences; and
- That students can demonstrate that they have the motivation to sustain the effort needed to pass the Diploma.
The Selection Process
The selection process includes three elements: an application form; an interview and written tests.
Application form
All applicants must complete a written application form.
Interview
All applicants must attend an interview held by two members of staff, including a senior academic. In addition to providing the opportunity to assess a candidate’s motivation for wishing to study for the Diploma, interviews can be used to determine an applicant’s grasp verbal English.
Written Tests
All applicants must take a test in mathematics and English language. Testing should be done under controlled conditions. Once all conditions of entry criteria are fulfilled, the candidate is a part of the Programme.
